Geo-strategist Parag Khanna looks around the world and sees echoes of the Middle Ages, with both West and East powerful, Middle East sheikhdoms, powerful city-states, wealthy multinational corporations, religious zealots and more. But in his new book, How to Run the World: Charting a Course to the Next Renaissance, Khanna says that a new Renaissance can follow once again, provided the recent examples of successful progress and modernization are heeded and “mega-diplomacy” is practiced in a borderless world. That’s especially important as new nations are formed, as in the independence referendum in South Sudan, and as a revolutionary fever roils the Middle East, from Tunisia to Egypt to Yemen.
